Well, to add to what MM said, BAP the advantage of always circulating money to the site but in a profitable way.

Purchasing a $1 ad pack grants us 2360 BAPs, plus some advertising some visits/banners etc.

Having BAPs in our balance help us qualify to receive paid ads, until we receive $1.18 valued ads.
This way we get free advertising and a 18% profit based on our ROI.

Also, the more BAPs one has, the higher valued ads he will receive.
So, for example I have a bit above 48000 BAPs and just today I received ads valued ~$0.50.
One of the ads was valued $0.454 and the rest were lower valued close to $0.01.
For every 2 days passed I purchase another ad pack just by my earnings here.

So, the profits build up our earning speed.
The next BAP group is at 96000 and they received ~$0.90 worth of ads today.

And there are a lot of BAP groups plus a lot of bonuses called achievements we receive for our overal activity on the site.
The site even allows us paying forward by purchasing BAPs for our referrals.. This helps with motivating them to stay active on the site.

So the bonus PTP money is flowing in too

So I was in the top 50% of users in therms of APS, then I was briefly in the top 10%, then back down to 50%, and now I'm in the top 5%? 

These ranks sure fluctuate a lot.

And the guy below you is a day behind.. but does click daily and achieves a lot generally..

Then the next day you may cross the guy above by having logged in more days than him due to him failing to log in for a single day.

You get the advantage, but then the guy below also gets that achiement and completes another one for his clicks or purchases etc.

I guess a lot of people are after those achievements... and some grant great bonuses.. that lead to advantage hops..

Some also fall behind as well.. so flunctuations should be normal now that we're close to the beginning of the program..

After some time I think the differences in APS should grow larger, achievement accomplishes more rare and positions will get more stable, just like PV..
